July.....a beautiful time of year when we can bond with nature and enjoy all that summer has to offer. Depending where you live, will affect not only the foods you eat, and how you dress, but also how you exercise and your fluid intake.
We all need to be aware of not only potential skin damage from the burning rays of the sun, but also the dangers of dehydration. Excessive heat exposure can cause dehydration , which in turn can cause heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Are you aware that the human body is approximately 70% water? Higher for children and babies and less for adults. A child's body surface area makes up a much greater proportion of his overall weight than an adults, which means children face a much greater risk of dehydration and heat related illness.
Some symptoms of Dehydration:
For adults common symptoms of mild dehydration include dry mouth, fatigue, headache and dizziness. Severe dehydration include sunken eyes, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, fever, delirium and in some cases lose of consciousness.
Once a child becomes dehydrated she/he becomes vulnerable to more serious heat related illnesses. Common symptoms are irritability and fatigue. If your child seems crabby get them out of the heat If your child complains of a headache or nausea, has clammy skin and begins to vomit they may have heat exhaustion.
Here is how to stay hydrated:
Water - Do not wait until you are thirsty! Drink water throughout the day. Use your urine to guide you if you are hydrated enough. The clearer the better! For children monitor their water intake to insure they are getting enough water.
Avoid - Alcohol and Caffeine on extremely hot days. Even though refreshing alcohol and caffeine dehydrates you even more!
Juices - All natural juices WITHOUT added sugars provide hydration.
Foods - Eat foods high in potassium such as banana's, mangos and pineapples. Fruits and vegetables are easy to digest and often high in water content.
